We were responsible for booking a church group into The Rufford Arms for their annual summer dinner, so popped in a few days before for a light lunch to finalise details. We were a three-some - we took an older member who had recently had major op and who didn't feel up to a full meal in the evening but liked the idea of a light lunch.
Sue the boss was there then but warned us she was on holiday when the group came. Our light lunch was delicious - I enjoyed a pulled pork salad. On the evening, Sue's well trained FOH team kept our group of over 30 fully served and all enjoyed the special group menu. Everyone seemed happy, and one person whose background is in food preparation and sales made a special point of saying how well it had all gone. We are always happy when we visit The Rufford Arms and feel privileged to have such a reliably good restaurant so close to us.
Father's Day , I booked The Rufford Arms because they never fail to give us good food, it's a bit far for us to travel but mum and dad like it. Our 'waiter' was a startlingly odd young chap with some odd behavioural issues which wasn't a problem until we actually asked for something, then it became a slightly irritating distraction fro our meal. Upon booking I asked if there was a set menu for Father's Day as I didn't want one and was told there was not.
Upon being seated we were each given a set menu which was infuriating, one of us then had to order off menu creating unnecessary fuss. Options were chips boiled or roast so I chose roast only to be served 3 pieces of ghostly pale potato soaked in fat and some dark green leaves soaked in oil - yuck. The chips for 2 to share wouldn't have fed a sparrow so we asked for a few more and were charged for an extra side of chips which did nothing to improve my dining experience. The other 2 steaks were butterflied - seems a bit criminal to butterfly a fillet steak. When the plates were collected we were not asked if we'd had a problem despite 2 plates being almost full.
The desserts were ok, the soft and alcoholic drinks were a bit over priced. We were seated directly next to the toilets and I'd specifically asked for a nice table when I booked.

All in all it was horrendous and I was so annoyed, we've been coming to the restaurant for years and I wanted father's day to be special but it was awful. I broke my diet specially to have a delicious meal and I was devastated that it was so bad, it was a very expensive mistake; money I can ill afford to waste. Most of the longer term staff are lovely and always come over to say hi to mum and I have to say it's usually a firm favourite for dinner but I left extremely frustrated, had I not been with my parents I'd have left and certainly wouldn't have paid for my meal.
Thank you for your review. However I am disappointed that after over 15 years of dining with us you did not feel you could raise the issues with me personally either on the evening or the next day, but rather raise the issues on a public platform over 6 weeks after the event, when I am not able to appease the situation or offer resolution.

I am sorry you did not like the table. I had placed you on a large table with comfy bucket seats away from families with smaller children that might have disturbed you. If you were not happy with the table we would have been more than happy to move you to an alternative available table of your choice, as has always been the case.
You requested the menu on arrival and were given this menu without hesitation. Two of the meals ordered were from the a la carte menu and accompaniments were changed to accommodate your guests preferences. The fillet steaks were requested to be well cooked. We always offer to butterfly well done fillet steaks due the thickness of the meat. The steak would not have been butterflied if the guest did not take up the option offered.
The staff are trained to ask the guests if the meals are to their satisfaction. At this point if there are any problems or issues we can rectify the situation. Pepper sauces were requested to accompany your steaks, which were served separately. By nature pepper sauce is hot, however other sauces were also available, which might have been more suitable for your 80 year old Father.
Drink prices are competitively priced for this area. We are actually cheaper then the local public houses in the area, and have not been increased for over 2 years. Obviously prices vary from area to area and are again subjective. All our prices are fully transparent. Once again thank you for your feed back.
